Our tips for giving medication

Categories : Our Blog

We are really lucky that Rusty takes his pills without any fuss; you can just drop them in his bowl, and he will literally just gobble them up! However, we’ve faced challenges with other dogs in the past.

Experts seem to handle giving pills to dogs effortlessly, but for many pet owners, it can be a real struggle. One of the simplest methods is to conceal the pill in a small portion of delicious, aromatic food. Using food that has a strong smell and flavour can help disguise the taste of the medication, making it more appealing for your dog.  Before you continue reading, make sure the pills can be taken with food.

Here’s our top ten – in order of success rate for us.
•    Pate – this one has never failed us.
•    Bananas – healthy and sweet.
•    Soft cheese like brie and camembert
•    Pitted dates have a built-in pill pocket
•    Milk – how do you hide it in milk I hear you say!  If the pill can be crushed adding the powder to a drop of milk works great.
•    Turkey or chicken - a cube of cooked breast, or a cooked meatball.
•    Hot dogs – soft and easy to hide
•    Bread – soft and easy, and you can always add a tasty spread of peanut butter etc.
•    Peanut butter – a bit messy but it works, make sure does not contain xylitol
•    Marshmallows – due to the high sugar content this would be the last option but if it’s the only way to get the pills then so be it.

Tips and Tricks
•    Give your dog just a little bit of food along with the pill to make sure they actually take it.
•    If you have an especially bitter pill it can be hard to trick them, alternating what you hide it in will help.
•    Give three treats: The first one is to build their trust. The second hides the pill. And, the third treat is to make up for tricking them.

The information shared here come from personal experience, if your dog has any allergies or health issues, please ensure the food is appropriate before using it.
